Arta is a city on mainland Greece in the region of Epirus situated very near to the Ambracian gulf and at the estuary of Arachthos River. Arta was the capital of Epirus in ancient times while during the Byzantine era it was the capital of Despotate of Epirus.

The surrounding area of Arta has an exceptional natural environment, high mountains, rivers, springs and waterfalls, lagoons with many rare species of birds, while the plain of Arta is famous for its agricultural production.

The major sight of Arta is the historical bridge of Arta, but due to its long history Arta has many sights of archaeological, historical and religious interest in the area as there are many Byzantine churches and monasteries.
